Introducing the Exo-Trainer

Summary

Introducing the Exo-Trainer by Lucian Randolph. The Exo-Trainer is an exoskeletal robotic human exercise machine originally designed for NASA in the 1980’s as a means of musculo-skeletal training in micro-gravity.

The Exo-Trainer Details

The actual unit you are looking at is one of several dozen that were originally designed and built by Lucian in the 1980’s as a means of countermeasure against micro-gravity induced musculo-skeletal atrophy for use aboard the (now non-existent) space station “Freedom” or on a manned trip to Mars. (The current space station replaced the “Freedom” design and is designated Space Station “Alpha” – but is also called the International Space Station or ISS).

The Exo-Trainer was designed to support and maintain physical performance in humans and is capable of training the entire body as a means of maintaining fitness, as well as, performing functional physical therapy and rehabilitation. The all-in-one exoskeletal design is based on the human endoskeletal system and is functionally derived from bio-locomotion dynamics. It can be used to maintain physical performance capabilities by utilizing specific force vector alignments of the limbs and the precise application of non-gravitationally-based loads on each of the primary and secondary kinematic joints in any combination.

By adjusting the load application and the motion control of the user’s limbs, the Exo-Trainer can be used to recreate the same force dynamics that the body uses to perform normal type exercises or activities. This versatility allows the unit to be used for flexibility training exercises and protocols as well as (separate) typical strength training exercises, aerobic exercises and even high output endurance training protocols. It was manufactured as a product for a short period of time and briefly appeared in the Sharper Image Catalog* (where it quickly sold to an untold number of professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities) and subsequently became the basis for numerous exoskeletal robot projects worldwide.

* Thanks to Howard for allowing me to use his unit as the basis for a new product design for the open market.

Stratovision proposed plane

The Stratovision Concept Plane

Welcome to Planet TV – I’m Lucian.

I’ve been working on some very big and important stuff. For those of you who have read about me or have watched the show for some time, you know something about what I do. Basically, I solve problems… no… I’m not a hitman. The problems I solve are bigger than that. For the first time ever, I’m going to show you one of the problems I’ve been working on.

On 9/11 almost every communication system in Lower Manhattan failed. In fact, even the few government systems that continued to work, did not actually function as intended for complete emergency system command and control.

Three years later, hurricane Katrina showed that the emergency communication systems employed by government (as well as commercial systems) were still vulnerable to natural disasters.

As you are probably aware, analog television in the United States ended on June 12. As part of that transition, the FCC held out a large chunk of radio spectrum in the 700MHz band. This chunk of radio spectrum was intended to provide a nationwide emergency broadband service that included an emergency communication system that was impervious to natural or man-made disasters and that covered the entire country.

Ending last summer, the majority of the other spectrum was auctioned off by the FCC for use by telecommunication companies and others. However, the 700MHz emergency public services spectrum had a minimum bid of $1.3 billion dollars. Not one telecommunication company placed the bid… not one. This is because there is not a single commercial technology that is capable of providing a service impervious to natural or man-made disasters and is capable of covering every inch of the country. In fact, there is only one military technology that is capable of this feat. And that technology is the AWACS.

The AWACS is a system used by the United States military to provide battlefield and theater-wide communications. The system routes all communication through the airborne assets and uses no permanent ground based infrastructure. Hence the usefulness in battle – nothing that happens on the ground can disrupt communication. Therefore, command and control can be maintained.

Here’s my solution for the problem of a nationwide emergency communication network. I have the only FAA certified wireless mesh and emergency services communication system based on a civilian version of the military AWACS and including a new emergency services version of a military video communicator system that I designed.

My system uses long-range highly fuel efficient jets that fly at 45,000 feet and use the 700MHz spectrum to connect the personnel communicators with each other. This spectrum is the same as the high UHF channels which can reach deep into buildings, basements, valleys and even canyons. Best of all, this system is independent of anything on the ground or any other network. If the internet goes down, it does not affect our system. If the phone systems (cell or landline) go down, if the power is disrupted, if bombs are going off or planes are crashing down… our system is unaffected. Just like the military AWACS, our system sends and receives all communication through the private IP network riding on the wireless mesh covering the United States.

And this is not science fiction that I’m talking about. This system exists right now and has hundreds of hours of testing and performance data to prove it works. My system is cheaper, faster to deploy and environmentally less-intrusive than any other alternative. Plus, it has a lower carbon footprint for build-out, operation and maintenance than any other potential system that has been developed (or proposed) to address this capability. Most importantly, short of a nuke, my system cannot be taken offline by anything…

Here’s what’s happening now. The FCC is currently holding public hearings on what to do with the 700MHz public service spectrum. One of the ideas is to break the nationwide block up into different sections. If this spectrum is broken up, this is what will happen. There will be no incentive to cover the wilderness portions of the country. And there may be no incentive to cover the rural sections of the country (just as there has been no incentive to provide broadband service to most rural communities and wilderness areas. And even if other telecoms tried to cover these areas, they couldn’t do it without digging cable trenches, stringing wires or planting radio towers all over the countryside. And the cost of any other proposed system would start at about ten times the price of my system. Most importantly, these other plans will not have the video communicator system and the civilian AWACS that provides complete protection against failure from anything short of a nuke and covers the whole country from coast to coast – even in the middle of the wilderness. The likelihood is the big telecommunication companies will just try to put a private phone network over the system. That technology will not help the emergency services communication efforts. What is needed here is new technology and new ideas. That’s what I do.

My plan uses technology and systems that are capable of functioning during anything up to and including war – because they were designed from the same systems that we actually use during war. Nothing in the commercial market even comes close… And speaking of the commercial market. My system can also provide the first wireless broadband service that covers every square inch of the country – even while moving. Full broadband speed on any device anywhere. And I do mean anywhere. My service will provide the first high-speed data and communication link that will work in any location, regardless of how remote. And there’s a lot more that it can do.

I need your help. Please go to the site and sign the petition to demand that the FCC review this plan. Share this video and this story. You can also follow my attempts to reach the country’s billionaires and our political leaders as I put together this $15.0 billion project. So follow me on Twitter. And if you know any billionaires, tell them to drop me a note.

BTW, This project is much larger than I have been able to tell you about and includes a new and larger future for the Planet TV Station. Stay tuned for more.
